Description : Saint Joseph’s monastery was the first Benedictine woman’s convent founded in 1852. The Benedictine motto “to pray to work”, it was originally a self-sustained facility with its own crops and livestock. Later housing a ceramic shop, a recycling center and a gift shop. The nuns worked in and with the community teaching, nursing etc. Due to declining enrollment and aging nuns, it was officially closed in 2014 with the remaining 17 nuns unanimously agreeing to close, and they were dispersed elsewhere.
