Description	:	Saint Mary's Cemetery is maintained by the Immaculate Conception parish of North Washington, Iowa. A short History: A child of Thomas Zeien died, and there being no cemetery, Mr. Paul Roethler graciously donated the land which should serve for the purpose. Read More	Saint Mary's Cemetery is maintained by the Immaculate Conception parish of North Washington, Iowa. A short History: A child of Thomas Zeien died, and there being no cemetery, Mr. Paul Roethler graciously donated the land which should serve for the purpose. This also gave the people the impetus for the erection of a church, and in the year 1863, a little log church was built upon the land where the present cemetery is located, which was the first Catholic Church in Chickasaw County. As no resident priest was appointed, the good people gathered in their humble little oratory on Sundays, recited prayers and sand the old and beautiful hymns which they had learned in their fatherland. There services were led and encouraged by the energetic Frank Cimmiyotti, who was termed "the priest" by his fellow parishioners. The church on the cemetery grounds grew to small for the congregation and it was necessary disassemble it and build a new one. Rock for the new church was broken out of the quarries near Basset and hauled by willing parishioners to the center of North Washington, where the limestone church was built. This church did not last and was torn down, and the stone was ground up and used to make the cement for the new church. There were 350 cubic yards of crushed limestone. The other building materials were hauled from Devon, a distance of three miles. The construction project required 65 railroad cars of material. In addition, 1700 loads of sand and gravel were hauled by parishioners with horses-drawn wagons. This church was dedicated in 1924.
