Description	:	The Sanborn farmyard/houseyard was one of many in the Franklin area documented by the Colonial Dames of America 1916 through 1942. The old "mother town" of Sanbornton was on or near where British Fort Atkinson had once been. Finally, Sanbornton was organized in 1771, with a Sanborn as its first town moderator. The newer town of Franklin, formed in 1828, had two parts. Its denser village portion was the now defunct village of Salisbury. Its more rural portion was carved out of the mother town of Sanbornton, annexed in 1828 to former Salisbury, against the will of both Sanbornton and the annexed chunk. Protests followed. These included forming of a "union" academy and a "union" church on the boundary between Franklin and Sanbornton. Unable to use the cemeteries of the regular churches in Sanbornton and old Salisbury, people may have resorted to doing burials in their farm yards. Jeremiah French and two Morrisons, Bradbury and wife Anna, were active in signing a petition that began the protest, as were many neighbors named Sanborn. Sanborns with junior sons may have taken over the French-Morrison property, causing the Dames to label the cemetery as "Sanborn Yard, on the Road to Gaza". A Mrs. Goss of the Colonial Dames's Dover, NH chapter apparently found the tiny cemetery and recorded the three inscriptions, still clear at the time. The graves were quite old by the time the markers were moved to the larger Morrison Cemetery in Franklin. When graves are old, not fresh, the stones may be moved and set up elsewhere as cenotaphs. The decaying of coffins and breaking of old bones as tractors with mowers, etc, go over the land means that old bones were left behind. We do not think Sanborn yard with the bones and Morrison Cemetery with the stones were the same cemetery, as the larger cemetery has many more old stones than the three written up by Mrs. Goss.
