Description	:	The Schlosskirche, or castle church, in Bad Dürkheim, formerly the Church of St. Johannis, is the main Protestant church of the city. It is an important building of the early Gothic period in the Palatinate. Count Emich IX of Leiningen-Hardenburg (died 1535) built a funerary chapel between 1504 and 1508 with a crypt, attached to the southeastern aisle of the church. Read More	The Schlosskirche, or castle church, in Bad Dürkheim, formerly the Church of St. Johannis, is the main Protestant church of the city. It is an important building of the early Gothic period in the Palatinate. Count Emich IX of Leiningen-Hardenburg (died 1535) built a funerary chapel between 1504 and 1508 with a crypt, attached to the southeastern aisle of the church. It is a late Gothic building with two gables, a gable roof and ribbed vaults, which is spatially connected to the church. Inside, several Gothic tombstones and Renaissance epitaphs have been preserved. The most important is a monumental double epitaph of Count Emich XII of Leiningen-Hardenburg and his wife Maria Elisabeth of Palatinate-Zweibrücken, daughter of Duke Wolfgang of Palatinate-Zweibrücken. The Speyer sculptor David Voidel created it around 1612 and behind the princely figures you can see, among other things, a relief that shows the former building stock of the ancestral seat Hardenburg. The chapel also includes the grave slabs of the builders, Count Emich IX of Leiningen and his wife Agnes née von Eppstein-Münzenberg (died 1533), as well as remains of Gothic wall paintings. At the opening of the crypt in 1926, the remains of a total of 9 people buried here were found. The eastern part of the chapel is the so-called ruler's lodge, a separate area open to the church, from which the Count followed the service. This division is also visible externally. West, with three-part pointed arch window, the actual funerary chapel; east, with small pointed arch window and separate exterior door, the rulers' lodge. Damage to the vaults and pillars led to an extensive restoration in the years 1977 to 1980 by the architect Martin Vogel. The interior of the church was greatly changed and adapted to the early Gothic style of the building.
