| Description | : | The Shaker Burial Ground was the first cemetery used by the Shaker community in Hancock. This burial place began in 1790 and was no longer used after the epidemic of 1813 that necessitated the establishment of the Shaker Cemetery. The cemetery is located at the archeological site of the Shaker's "West Family Community". This is not the site that is promoted as being along a hiking trail (that is the "North Family Community" archeological site). The Massachusetts Historical Commission does not refer to this cemetery in MACRIS. The report for the cemetery in Pittsfield (PIT820) does mention this location as well. |
