Description	:	The Simpkins Family Cemetery was established May 14,1924 with the burial of Icie Bell Simpkins Akers; the first burial. Family history is that her wishes were to be buried just to the east of the current location on a knoll overlooking the Little River and the farms across the river going into Indian Valley. Family history is that her wishes were to be buried just to the east of the current location on a knoll overlooking the Little River and the farms across the river going into Indian Valley. When attempting to dig they discovered solid rock and could not dig her grave there. The cemetery is located on what is called the "Old Home Place" which is no longer owned by the family. My Great Grandpa Isaac Garfield Simpkins had married Sarah Catherine Quesenberry and moved from Deep Water Carrol County, VA. to buy this farm. On this farm my grandpa, Griffie Howard Simpkins, was born and raised along with his siblings: Oden,Osgood,Ruepard,Colon, Icie, Tokie, Edith. The tragedy of Icie's death in child birth made her the first to be buried on the farm. This is a private cemetery with most all the burials being the descendants of Isaac Garfield Simpkins and Sarah Catherine Quesenberry with a few exceptions of close family relations by marriage and one non-relation of a St. Clair because they had no family cemetery in the area of their own and were not locals. There are also graves without markers some with and some without simple local stones. Of note: My grandpa Griffie and Great Uncle Ruepard married sisters: Nina Wilson and Stella Wilson creating double cousins. Family Oral History: The picture of the view to the northwest with the little house in the distance is the house where my grandmother Sarah Catherine Simpkins died. Her son Osgood had started a family and being the oldest was given the main house and the little cottage was built for his still living mother. In the evenings her sons had a habit of going and sitting with her on the porch after dinner. From the porch you could see the main entrance gate onto the property. As it was getting dusk she remarked that she wondered who would be coming to visit at that time at night and pointed to the road across the holler. Everyone present looked over at the road but could not see anyone. My grandmother then told everyone "Cant you see that women in the long white dress?" Everyone told her "No" and she began to point and direct their attention again to the women stating "You don't see her, she is right their at the gate post...she is beautiful..." and then stopped in mid sentence. She then looked at each of them individually and told them how much she loved them. Of course seeing a women they couldn't and then acting the way she was they became very concerned. At first she would not talk to them about it and just abruptly dropped the whole seeing a women thing. She finally relented and told them that it was a omen and she would die tonight. They asked her why she would think that and she told them because only she could see the women and again expressed her love for all of them. They assured her that she was okay that it must be the failing light and other excuses while she continued to look at the gate post. Shortly she announced as it got dark she was tired and needed to bed, and she seemed to be at peace and not upset at all. The family with trepidation left to go back to the main house assuring her she would be fine. The next morning they went to check on her first thing due to the incident the evening before. My grandmother had died in her sleep that night as she had foretold. I grew up hearing this true story and many more about my family. Certain people in my family are what some would call special. My grandfather, Griffie, and my mother were two of them. The stories I grew up with were sometimes funny, sad, or just about life and being poor in the mountains. However, quite a few would raise the hair on the back of your neck and still do to this day. This was one of them. My wife gave me a book in the early 2000's on Irish Folklore. I was reading a chapter on "Banshee's" and how certain Irish/Scottish/Celtic families can hear or see the woman in white who is sent to warn their families of an impending death. Up until then I did not know anything about this, but my mind immediately recalled the above story. Did my grandmother see a Banshee or was it just shadows in the failing light. Did my grandfather dream and tell my aunt about me before my mother had even married, the result of which saved my aunts life. Did my mother dream about my cousins stabbing and near death for six months before it happened...all I know is that the above is true, my family believes and so do I, even in the failing light.
