Other Day – Ampatutokicha Paul – Mahzakutemanne Lorenzo Lawrence – Towanetaton Simon – Anahwangmanne Mary Crooks – Mahkahta Heiya win, Maggie Brass – Snana win Description Sioux Indians State Monument is a fifty-foot granite shaft overlooking Highway 19 near Morton. Erected by the Minnesota Historical Society in 1899, the monument honors the Indians who protected and saved the lives of white settlers during the the Dakota War (Sioux Uprising) of 1862. Many Dakota Indians, including mixed-bloods, rendered assistance to white settlers during the great outbreak. However, the Society resolved to honor the memorials and services of the "truly loyal Indians" by requiring the following for those whose names were to be cut in the granite die of the monument: 1. The subjects were to be full-blooded Indians. 2. They were to have been truly loyal to the whites throughout the entire period of the outbreak, from its inception, on the 18th of August, 1862, until the close of that year. 3. They were to have actually, by personal effort and in a practical manner, saved the life of at least one white person. After careful and thorough investigation the Society decided that the names of only five Indians, four men and a woman, were, entitled to be inscribed on the monument. The claims of scores of others were presented, but in the Society's opinion they did not meet the full requirements demanded. However, space was left for names to be added. After her death in 1908, Mary Brass's name was added. She had a direct role in saving the life of Mary Schwandt. Inscription: The words ‘Patriotism, Courage, Fidelity, and Humanity' are on the four sides of the monument and on the ‘Humanity' side, the inscription reads: Erected A. D. 1899 by the Minnesota Valley Historical Society to commemorate the brave, faithful, and humane conduct of the loyal Indians who saved the lives of white people and were true to their obligations throughout the Sioux War in Minnesota of 1862 and especially to honor the services of those here named.
