Description	:	The Church of St Mary The Virgin stands overlooking the River Thames at Hampton, in the south-west corner of Greater London. It was built in 1831 using good quality white bricks. The Church was built by Edward Lapidge, who is buried in the churchyard. The opening ceremony, in the presence of Their Royal Majesties, was marred by poor weather, a situation made worse by the arrival of a group of 'roughs and pickpockets, returning from Egham races'. Read More	The Church of St Mary The Virgin stands overlooking the River Thames at Hampton, in the south-west corner of Greater London. It was built in 1831 using good quality white bricks. The Church was built by Edward Lapidge, who is buried in the churchyard. The opening ceremony, in the presence of Their Royal Majesties, was marred by poor weather, a situation made worse by the arrival of a group of 'roughs and pickpockets, returning from Egham races'. In 1603 the area was devastated by the plague and 121 poor souls were interred, probably ten times the yearly average. This is one of those sites where 18th Century memorials have failed to survive, the site having been renovated in 1972, following reports of gruesome finds. The church includes a macabre crypt full of coffins, which pre-dates the modern building, though one of the coffins is clearly marked 1841. As well as the local population, a number of notable people who lived in Hampton Wick are buried here. This was the burial ground for Hampton Court Palace. The noted local historian, Henry Ripley, was organist at St. Mary's for 21 years. known areas of the churchyard: section A is behind or north of the church. It includes the pyranid mausoleum to John Greg. Section B continues from section A, but is east of the east wall of the church. section E is in front of, or south of the church, nearest to the river, and seems to extend to the eastern perimeter. It includes Greenwood. sections C,D and F exist.
