Description : The cemetery and church is built on the site of Pene Taui's Pa (fort) at which was fought the battle of Ohaeawai on the 1st July 1845. It is listed as a historic place with category 1 status. The Battle of Ohaeawai was fought between British forces and local Māori during the Flagstaff War in July 1845. Te Ruki Kawiti, a prominent rangatira (chief) was the leader of the Māori forces.
