Description	:	The church of St Vigeans stands on a largely artificial and historical hill. The church is surrounded by a large graveyard which has yielded over the 19th and 20th centuries some 40 early medieval carved fragments, found built into the walls of the church or buried in the graveyard. The prominent mound has been heightened and shaped to give it a striking appearance. The strategic site has been a centre of Christian religious activity for over 1300 years, and it seems likely a Pictish community founded a monastery here in around 700 AD. The church is surrounded by a large graveyard which has yielded over the 19th and 20th centuries some 40 early medieval carved fragments, found built into the walls of the church or buried in the graveyard. The prominent mound has been heightened and shaped to give it a striking appearance. The strategic site has been a centre of Christian religious activity for over 1300 years, and it seems likely a Pictish community founded a monastery here in around 700 AD. Some parts of the church's stonework date to the early 12th century, and the original, small building was extended to the south and consecrated in 1242. A further extension was carried out in 1485, when the tower was heightened. The present form of the church dates largely from 1871, when it was rebuilt by architect Rowland Anderson, including the north aisle, enlarged west tower and the large apse at the east end. St Vigianus is now identified as the Irish St Fechin.
