Description : The church of St Vigeans stands on a largely artificial and historical hill. The church is surrounded by a large graveyard which has yielded over the 19th and 20th centuries some 40 early medieval carved fragments, found built into the walls of the church or buried in the graveyard. The prominent mound has been heightened and shaped to give it a striking appearance. The strategic site has been a centre of Christian religious activity for over 1300 years, and it seems likely a Pictish community founded a monastery here in around 700 AD.
