Description	:	In 1802, William Stoughton, who was one of the original settlers of Butler County, along with Luke Covert and John Wigton, arrived in Butler County and settled on his farm. He and his son John owned 500 acres, between them and their farms were in Middlesex Township. Read More	In 1802, William Stoughton, who was one of the original settlers of Butler County, along with Luke Covert and John Wigton, arrived in Butler County and settled on his farm. He and his son John owned 500 acres, between them and their farms were in Middlesex Township. In 1804, with the formation of new Townships, this location became part of Center Township and in 1850, it became present day Clay Township. As William aged, he sold his farm to his son, Rev. Samuel Stoughton, in 1817 and later part of it to his grandson William Stoughton and then some to his son Andrew. The portion of this farm, on which this cemetery rests, now, was the portion that was sold to his son Andrew. East and west, the original 50 acres of property would encompass all of the land from the Clay Township line to about 1/4 mile past the intersection of present day Hall and Claytonia Roads and north and south from about 1/3 mile north of Hall road to about 1/3 mile south of Hall road. (Boundaries are approximations only) The Rev. Samuel Stougton, a Baptist Minister, it was said, was similar in belief to the Harmonists, who were not that far away and resided in the Butler County towns of Harmony and Zelienople, PA and, like them, he did not believe in marking the gravesites. Now, this small family cemetery is on the southeast corner of what was William's original property and was later to be the Rev. Samuel's property. There are only two marked graves here and those graves are Isaac Miller Cornelius's children and he married Effie Jane Stoughton. We are not sure if Isaac and Effie Jane are here or not. However, because these Cornelius graves are here it has been noted that this place has erroneously been called the Cornelius Cemetery in some documentation...This assumption is wrong! In 1998, One of the elderly Stoughton family members, Thelma (Stoughton) Hull, before she passed on, informed me that there were as many as 25 or 30 of the Stoughton Family buried, unmarked, in this small plot. She was positive that Jacob and his wife, Margaret were here and she thought, that she had heard it was the final resting place of William, several of his children, including Rev. Samuel and family and John W. Stoughton, also a son of William. Since we have no way of grave verification and since Rev. Samuel and William show up no where else, we must take Thelma at her word. It is also worth noting that, in 1823, shortly after William passed on, there are papers filed that indicate a Coroner's inquest into his death and these were filed in Center Township. This property was in Center Township, at that time, and there is, I would guess, a very high degree of probability that William, Rev. Sam and families are buried here in their family cemetery. This cemetery is presently located in the front yard of a home owner and is now on private property and one must park in his driveway to visit this place. Permission is always a good thing to get and this land owner has not denied any one yet; to my knowledge.
