Description | : | An acre of land was ceded from the Crown in 1840 to be used for a church and cemetery. The first known burial, also in 1840, was that of John Jagger, son of pioneer settlers Matthew and Mary Jagger. Built in 1846, the Tabernacle Church was named by it's founder, the Reverend Ridgway W. Newland, after his former parish church in Hanley, Staffordshire, England. The church was a small limestone building with a timber shingled roof, two French windows and a verandah on one side.
