Description	:	The Thomas Family Cemetery was destroyed by a home developer in the early 1960s. The graves exist under and around Thorne Road, near the intersection of Arlington Street Extension and Vestal Road. In 1980, the contributor spoke to a resident of that street who mentioned that, after big rains, the graves would occasionally collapse-especially the graves under Thorne Road. After the graves would collapse under the street,... Read More	The Thomas Family Cemetery was destroyed by a home developer in the early 1960s. The graves exist under and around Thorne Road, near the intersection of Arlington Street Extension and Vestal Road. In 1980, the contributor spoke to a resident of that street who mentioned that, after big rains, the graves would occasionally collapse-especially the graves under Thorne Road. Thorne Road was a dirt road at that time. According to the uncle of the contributor, most of the graves are located under a house and lawn of that house on Thorne Road. After the graves would collapse under the street, the residents or county road workers would fill the hole with gravel or dirt. The contributor theorizes that the wooden coffins had rotted, causing the road to collapse under the weight of cars and the rain had washed some of the supporting dirt away. The road is paved now. The grave list (plat) was obtained by the contributor from his cousin, the late Eugene Thomas, Vestal Road, Rocky Mount, NC. He obtained it from his father, William Jolly Thomas. The contributor beleives it was prepared by William Jolly's father, James Aaron Thomas. Since the Thomases owned that land since 1756,(1,100 acres) it possible that there are more graves in this cemetery than are listed here. The patriarch of the Thomas Family of Tyancokey Swamp is not listed (Phillip Thomas)nor his son Jacob. Jacob's son, Wilson is listed. Cokey Road bordered the Thomas plantation to the northeast. It is unknown if there were ever headstones. The birth and death date information of the people in this memorial was obtained from other sources. In 1980, the contributor contacted the NC Dept of Health concerning the issue of cemetery destruction. The department stated that this was a civil law matter.
