Description	:	Upham Cemetery is an active cemetery under the care of the Upham Cemetery District. Due to it's proximity to Rackerby & Bangor, the Upham cemetery was sometimes mistaken as the Rackerby or Bangor cemetery. Read More	Upham Cemetery is an active cemetery under the care of the Upham Cemetery District. Due to it's proximity to Rackerby & Bangor, the Upham cemetery was sometimes mistaken as the Rackerby or Bangor cemetery. It received it's name from the Upham school district in which it lies, which in turn was named for Isaac Upham, an early school teacher. It was officially created in May 12th, 1875 when Dewitt C. Day sold 2 acres and 100 square yards to the people for the purpose of a public grave yard, for the sum of $30. Prior to that, the property had been part of the Dewitt C. Day ranch and may have been known as the Day cemetery with several relatives, neighbors and friends already buried there. The area is prone to brush fires during the summer and the Upham cemetery fell victim to them at least twice. In 1926, a fire swept through the area, burning the cemetery and destroying the chapel. Then again in 1936 another fire swept through the cemetery but this time the chapel was saved. These fires may explain the large number of unmarked graves. Those marked with wooden markers could have been destroyed. Throughout the years efforts were made to improve the cemetery. Several annual "Clean-up Days," were held on the first Saturday in April. In 1927, a new chapel was built through subscription to replace the chapel that had burnt the year before. The plans for the 1930 Clean-up day included a fence on the east side of the cemetery, and extension of water mains, purchasing chairs & improvement of spring, the work being done through dues being paid at $1 per year by the subscribers. In 1951, the Upham Cemetery District was created and the trustees elected. The first chairman was Harvey Sheehan. Mrs. Alta Ketchersid served as caretaker for several years. In 1973, the cemetery was surveyed, a map drawn up and the graves numbered. Several Blocks were created around the older section to allow for new burials. The chapel that was rebuilt in 1927 is not on the map and no longer exists. It had been outside of the cemetery to the left of the front gate.
