The story goes that one or both sons were mentally handicapped. It seems there may have been a fence around the house and the mother took the two boys outside the fence and told them to stay there. However, one followed her inside the burning house where mother and son died. The second son came on the front porch and he also died in the fire. ... It is assumed that Eli was in the fields working or away from the house when the fire broke out. As of March 2013 no newpaper articles have been located to ascertain the specific date of the fire and deaths.
