Description	:	White Oak Lick is a famous locality, 20 odd miles west of Staunton, Virginia, and derives its name from a salt spring or "lick" near the settlement which stands near a white oak tree. Ref: "The National Tribune of Washington, D.C, Thursday October 5, 1899". White Oak Lick was a small community of about 4 families in the Western Part of Augusta County. This isolated circular valley is at the headwaters of North River, which flows into Elkhorn Lake. Elkhorn Lake being built long after the Civil War ended. The idylic hamlet was mention in "THE NATIONAL TRIBUNE of WASHINGTON D C THURSDAY5 OCTOBER 5 1899" in a descriptive narrative of events occuring during the Civil War. Little Bald Knob, is just to the north of White Oak Lick. There were three white families and one black family that resided in the hidden eden. The article focuses up "Uncle Jimmy Todd" and his family and the events during the Civil War. James Todd and Julia Ann Todd were living in this area of the county. As it was December 1862, a neighborning family of Joseph Michael and his wife, Susan, were living in White Oak Lick. Four of the family members died. Topographical maps of the area do provide a specific location of the burial cemetery, or denoted as CEM, on topographical maps. However, the David Rumsey Map Collection at the Library of Congress, does provide some information. The location of "Mrs Todd" house, and "H. Shiplett" house and buildings. The location of the house of Joseph Michael and Susan Michael, is across from "Still-House Holler" and up the creek. Which probably those buried in the cemetery were buried on land where the Michael's were living. Although, names are not listed with the two buildings that are shown on the Hotchkiss map, but can be inferred based upon the deaths of the Michael children in 1862.
