G A Neuffer Jr, Dies in Abbeville World War Veteran Was Decorated for Bravery Gottlob Augustus Neuffer Jr, died at his father's home last night at 12:30 afrter an illness of two weeks and a long period of declining health. Funeral service will be held Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock at the residence. Interment will be in Melrose cemetery. Gotlobb Neuffer was the son of Dr G A Neuffer and Annie Hemphill Neuffer, and was born November 30, 1889. He graduated from the Abbeville high school and attended the university and later Clemson College, gibving up his studies on account of his health. He enlisted for military service on the border in 1916 as a private in a machine gun company and was promoted to a sergeant's place. With the coming of the World war, he went in as a first lieutenant in the machine gun company of the First South Carolina infantry and was later assigned to the machine gun unit of the 118th infantry of the Thirtieth division. He served in many engagements and was cited for bravery and meritorius conduct October 17, 1918 when he was seriously wounded. He was sent home after some time in a hospital in Abbeville, France, and Dartford, Kent, England, and was mustered out of the service after the armistice in Columbia. He was the commander of the Abbeville Post No 2 of the American Legion at Abbeville some years ago. Mr Neuffer was employed in the Abbeville postoffice for 14 years retiring last year on account of his health. He is survived by his father, his stepmother, Mrs Florence Henry Neuffer, and the following half sisters and brothers: Misses Florence, Maria, and Sarah Neuffer, And Dr Frank H Neuffer, Happoldt Neuffer, Claude John and Mack Neuffer. Mrs Robert R Hemphill is his grandmother and Mrs M T Coleman, Mrs W P Greene, Mrs Gertrude Sign [? Sigo?], Mrs Grace Rogers, all of Abbeville, and Mrs Rachel Minshall of Spartanburg, James C Hemphill of Greenwood and William L Hemphill of California are aunts and uncles.
