Bennett Died in Washington Friday and Was Buried Yesterday Captain Joseph L. Bennett who formerly lived in this city died in Washington Friday as the result of a stroke of paralysis received last June. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon and the interment was in the National Cemetery at Arlington. General Hawley attended the funeral as did Judge Marcus A. Holcomb of Southington who was a brother-in-law of Captain Bennett. Among the bearers were General Frank B. Sloat of New Haven, employed in the Patent Office, Hiram Buckingham and Captain Patrick O'Farrell. Captain Bennett was a native of Rhode Island and served in the First Rhode Island Infantry from May 2, 1861 to August 2 of the same year. He came to Hartford soon after the war and was in the house furnishing business as a member of the firm Crittenden & Bennett and an auctioneer. He was the first Adjutant of Nathaniel Lyon Post G.A.R. and was Assistant Adjutant General under General Charles T. Stanton of Governor Hawley's staff in 1867. He held a clerkship in the government envelope works here during the Harrison administration. In 1891 he was appointed Chief Clerk of the Patent Office, William E. Simonds being then Patent Commissioner. For the past few years he had been practicing before the Patent Office and he was an applicant for reinstatement as Chief Clerk when he was stricken with paralysis. A few weeks after that he was married at his urgent request to his nurse, Miss Jennie Turner. He also leaves a daughter, who is married and lived in Holyoke and a son, Fred F. Bennett, a lawyer of the same place.
