Leonard Peterson was born to Halvor and Alice (Monson) Peterson. He went to elementary school in Perkins County. . After high school in Brookings, South Dakota, Leonard went to college at Black Hills State College in Spearfish, South Dakota, in the fall of 1939. Leonard met Helen Lyon of Meadow, SD, at the Spearfish Park Dance in 1940, when they were both in college. They married 29 Dec. 1941. Their son Dennis Leonard was born on May 29, 1944, almost three months after Lt. Peterson's death. Leonard's father wanted him to be farmer, but Leonard had other plans. He was interested in making the Air Force a career. He was transferred to the Army Air Force and went into flight training to pursue his dream of becoming a pilot. He received his 2nd Lieutenant wings in the spring of 1943, and was sent to the Caribbean for several months. He was later given a short leave before being sent to the Hamilton Air Force Base. From there he was shipped out as a fighter pilot with eleven other pilots. Only three out of his group survived the war. Army 1st Lt. Leonard C. Peterson died on January 22, 1944, when his fighter plane was shot down over the Marshall Islands; he was buried on Guadalcanal. After the war his remains were sent to the cemetery at Bison, SD, for reburial. In 1947, Leonard's widow was married to Sam Tidball. In the year 2000, Leonard's son, Dennis, had his PhD and was Superintendent of Schools for the Cincinnati, Ohio, schools.
