Involved in 5/9/1864 on U.S. Army wagon train between Winchester and Newtown, VA. Was in scout to Belle Plain (just outside Fredericksburg) 5/15/1864. Took part of 7/5/1864 raid at Point Of Rocks, Md. Led 12-man detachment on 7/5/1864 during 2nd raid at Point Of Rocks, Md. Was in 7/6/1864 fight at Mt. Zion Church, near Aldie, VA. Captured in Fall 1864 and sent to Harper's Ferry, WVA.; escaped by securing a Federal overcoat and mixing with passing U.S. troops. Involved in 10/14/1864 "Greenback Raid" on B&O RailRoad near Duffield Station, Jefferson County, WVA. Mosby's Cavalry Regiment, formerly the 43rd Battalion, was organized in December, 1864. The battalion was formed in June, 1863, with five companies, later increased to eight. The unit served behind Federal lines in Northern Virginia and was the most effective command of its kind. The enemy forces were never safe and the area became known as "Mosby's Confederacy". ------------------------------------------------------------------ - DIED - In Mobile, Alabama, on Monday, May 27th, CHARLES LANDON HALL, of St. Louis, MO., fourth son of the late Dr. J.B. Hall, aged 30 years. Deceased was born in Fredericksburg, and passed his early life there. Animated by the spirit of adventure, when 20 years of age, he emigrated to Missouri, and there remained until 1861. When the late war commenced he was residing in St. Louis, but returning to Virginia, served with distinguished gallantry under Col. Mosby during the war. HALL - The remains of this gallant young man reached Fredericksburg Friday night, and were interred on Saturday. The burial services took place at the Episcopal Church, Rev. Mr. Maury officiating. A large concourse of citizens attended the church, and followed the corpse to the grave. The Masonic Fraternity, of which Captain H., was a member, were out at the funeral, and the impressive Masonic Burial Service was performed at the grave by the order, Dr. Preston Welford, Master, officiating on the occasion. It will be remembered by our readers that Captain Hall was shot in Mobile on the 21st ult., by a merchant named Perryman. The dying declaration of Captain Hall, in relation to the melancholy event was in substance as follows, as we learn from the Petersburg Express: Sometime since a letter of a very insulting nature was received in St. Louis, his place of business, by Captain Hall, from Perryman. He forthwith proceeded to Mobile, and going into the store of the latter, asked him if he wrote it. Perryman replied in the affirmative. Captain H. then said that it was a cowardly act to write such a letter to a man five hundred miles away. Perryman made a motion as if to try to draw a pistol, which Captain H. anticipated by quickly drawing a Derringer. Perryman then, instead of drawing, seized a barrel stave and struck his adversary on the wrist, just as he was pulling trigger. The pistol exploded and the ball went down. Perryman continued to strike at him with the stave. and Captain H. having no second pistol, was forced back into the street, upon reaching which he turned to go off, being entirely without any defensive weapon. Perryman then drew a revolver and shot him twice in the back, the balls taking effect in the stomach. Capt. H. lingered until the 27th, when he died from the effects of his wounds. The affair is truly a sad one. The victim was a noble hearted, generous young man. Of the person who killed him we know nothing, but presume he will undergo trial for the commission of the act.
