His brother, Sergeant Frank Hale, who is also serving in the Army air corps, is stationed at Washington State College, Pullman, Wash. EUREKAN MISSING IN MARCH 6 RAID Arleigh F. Hale Failed to Return Day 68 Bombers Lost "Your son...Arleigh F. Hale...missing in action...over Germany." These words were included in a telegram received yesterday by Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Hale, 1615 Hayes Street, Eureka from Adjutant General Ulio at Washington, D.C. Second Lieutenant Hale was a bombardier in a heavy bomber of the American Army air forces. He has been missing since March 6, the telegram said. This was the date when 68 American bombers failed to return from a large-scale raid on Berlin. The sorrowing parents last night sought to keep alive hope that their son may have parachuted safely when his place is presumed to have been shot down. The father said he feared the odds were against this, but said he presumed Arleigh's friends would wish to know he was missing. He was widely known here. Lieutenant Hale was born in Eureka, graduated from the Eureka schools, and was employed by the Bank of Eureka before he joined the Army in January, 1943. He was active in baseball and basketball at high school, and played third base for the Eureka Merchants in the Redwood League for a time. On his fifth mission he flew as the Co-Pilot with a new crew on their first mission (Note: According to the Dailies Report this was their second mission). EIGHTH AIR FORCE, 91st AAF BOMB GROUP, 323rd SQUADRON B-17 plane (ship no. 118) Crew Members: Pilot: 2lt Benjamin J Fourmy Jr Co-pilot: 2lt Herbert A Markle Navigator: 2lt James C Daragan Bombadier: 2lt Arleigh F Hale Engineer/Gunner: S/sgt Frederick E Walker Radio Operator: Sgt James H Pultz Ball Turret Gunner: Sgt Arthur P Collins Jr Waist Gunner: S/sgt Russell L Brinkerhoff Waist Gunner: Sgt Joseph Benoit Tail Gunner: S/sgt Theodore C Zawadzki It was the 6th of March 1944 and the first mission to Berlin. Enroute they were hit by fighters and flak, lost one engine and had another damaged and running poorly. They were unable to stay in formation and descended to tree top level and attempted to return to England. Inadvertently they flew over a Luftwaffe base and three fighters took off after them. They shot down two fighters but the third one forced them to crash, on fire, near Quackenburg, Germany. The Bombardier and Radio Operator were killed but Bert (the co-pilot) the other seven crewmen received only minor injuries and were captured. They were transported by boxcar to Dulag Luft in Frankfurt, Germany for interrogation. Bert was among a group of prisoners who successfully escaped the camp only to be captured by civilians near the coast at Barth and later marched to Moosburg, Germany (Stalag VII A) where he stayed until liberation by General Patton's troops in April 1945.
