Lt. Weyant's death was learned of last night in a telegram received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Weyant, west of this city. The 22-year-old B-29 pilot was helping ferry Superfortresses from Honolulu, Hawaii to this country. He had left the States by ship about two weeks prior to the crash and was returning to the Fairfield Suisan Army Air Base in California. Francis was born September 19, 1923 at Edgewood, la., to Leslie Weyant and Florence Sevey Weyant. He attended school in this city, graduating with the class of '41 from Oelwein High School. Lt. Weyant attended Iowa Stale Teachers College in Cedar Falls before entering the service in July, 1943. He received his commission in December 1944 and had been on duty in this country since that time. He is survived by his parents and one sister, Miss Lola Jean all at home. Details of the funeral service will be announced later, pending the arrival of the deceased from California. Brant's Funeral Home will be in charge. Oelwein Daily Register, March 26, 1946: Weyant Funeral Thursday Afternoon The body of Lt. Francis Weyant will arrive from Oakland, Calif., early this evening and will lie in state at the Weyant home west of this city until the hour of the service: Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. F. C. Witzigman, assisted by the local American Legion post, will conduct the funeral rites at the Methodist Church on Thursday. Oelwein Daily Register, March 28, 1946: Lieutenant Francis Gerald Weyant, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Weyant was born in Edgewood, Iowa, September 19, 1923 and left this world March 19, 1946, a victim of an airplane crash while in the service of his country. Lieut. Weyant spent one year at the place of his birth in Edgewood and one year in Chicago, Illinois, prior to his coming to Oelwein where his home has been since and to the time of his entrance into the Air Corps. He received his education in the Oelwein Public Schools graduating from the local high School in the class of 1941. He then attended the Iowa State Teachers' College at Cedar Falls where he was working on a degree in physical education. Lt. Weyant answered the call of duty to his country with his entrance into the Air Corps on July 14, 1943. Following completion of his basic training in Miami, Florida he embarked upon his flight training and received his pre-flight and primary instruction at Santa Ana, Visaila, and Stockton, California. He completed his advanced training at La Junta, Colorado and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Army of the United States on December 20, 1944. Following his graduation Lt. Weyant spent a brief furlough at his home after which he was assigned to duty at Roswell and Clovis, New Mexico from whence he journeyed to California and embarked for overseas with a contingent of Superfortress crews which were destined to ferry back to the United States, war-weary B-29 Bombers from the Superfortress bases in the Marianas Islands. Having completed the last and longest lap of his journey, from Hickam Field, Honolulu, Hawaii, to the California Mainland of the United States, the aircraft, one of a formation of five bombers, apparently became lost in heavy fog and with engine trouble as well as a shortage of fuel, crashed into the side of a mountain near Livermore, California, resulting in the death of Lt. Weyant, co-pilot; and the six remaining members of the crew of seven. Better known by his close friends as "Diz", Lt. Weyant possessed a magnetic personality. Evidence of his jolly character was his ever-present smile and friendly greeting for everyone. Always living his life to the fullest extent, he got out of life what he put into it. Lt. Weyant's invincible spirit and abounding energy was perhaps best portrayed by his activity in the baseball world. He was a lover of the sport and always added the essential pep which was so characteristic of the teams with which he played. Foremost among his many virtues, Christianity played a major role in his young life and he was a member of the local Methodist church. With deepest devotion to his parents and one remaining sister, Lola Jean, Lt. Weyant put forth every effort during his lifefor their comfort and happiness and it is with sorrow that only a loving family can know that they bid him goodbye physically. He will always occupy a spot in their hearts and only with deepest respect will he be thought of by his many friends and his 'buddies' with whom he flew. Memorial services were held at Grace Methodist Church March 28th, 1946 at 2:30 p. in. The pastor, the Rev. F. C. Witzigman officiating. Mr. Russell Brant sang, "Going Down the Valley"and "No Shadows." Mrs. Sophia Tait organist. The American Legion attended in large numbers and conducted the Military Honors at the Grave. Interment was made in Woodlawn Cemetery.
