Lieutenant Bottorff, husband of the former June Calhoun of 643 North Court street, died February 22, 1944, of wounds received the day before when the heavy bomber of which he was bombardier was shot down during a raid over Germany. Born November 10, 1921, at Hedrick, he attended Catholic Central high school in Ottumwa, graduating in 1940. He worked in the American Optical Co. for a year prior to attending the University of Iowa. He qualified as an aviation cadet in April, 1942, and received his wings and commission at Midland, Tex., June 3, 1943. His marriage took place June 15, 1943. He flew to the European theatre in November, 1943, and went on his first mission over Germany January 4, 1944. Lieutenant Bottorff was on his 11th mission when his plane was shot down. Surviving are his parents; his wife; one sister, Mrs. Leo Ullrich of Ottumwa, and his grandfather, T.O. Bottorff of Hedrick. Rosary services will be held at the Vaughan funeral home Friday at 8 p.m. LeRoy Larson, Bob Martin, Max Peters, Tom McKillip, Joe Morrissey, and Roger Poling will act as pallbearers.
