With the coming of the Civil War Seth enlisted at the tender age of 17 with Company B, the "Sandy Run Yellow Jackets" on September 2, 1861. Fighting in all the major campaigns Seth was steadily promoted to 3rd Sergeant of Company B, 34th Regiment, Scales Brigade, Wilcox's Division, 3rd Corps, Army of Northern Virginia.
