A representative citizen, a successful farmer, a thrifty, industrious and progressive man, he has always been one of the foremost in the march forward, while his integrity of character has won him the confidence and esteem of all with whom he has had business or social relations. Mr. Hammer was born in Hamilton County, Indiana, on August 26, 1841, his parents being Jacob and Hannah (Cox) Hammer. When but a year old he was removed by his parents to Missouri, and two years later he was brought thence across the plains in a large emigrant train to Oregon. The family first settled in Crehalem Valley, moving thence to Benton County about 1847. They took a donation land claim of six hundred and forty acres there and for a number of years afterward were engaged in farming and stock-raising. Our subject received a common-school education, and this, with the invigorating discipline of the farm and the habits of industry early acquired, have enabled him to succeed in the line of activity which he chose for his own, namely, farming. Coming to the Walla Walla valley in 1861, he worked on a farm there for a time, subsequently going back to Oregon. In Polk County, that state, he engaged first in farming as a business, but after five years he returned to Waitsburg, in the Walla Walla Valley, where he continued in the same calling until 1873. In that year he removed to the recently organized and promising Whitman County and took one hundred and sixty acres of government land about four and a half miles southwest of Elberton, where we now find him. His farm is among the most fertile of this rich section, and through his thrifty husbandry produces abundant crops of wheat and other cereals. In Polk County, Oregon, on July 19, 1868, Mr. Hammer married Olive R., daughter of Norman and Maria (Fudge) Scott, old and respected pioneers of the state of Oregon. We may mention incidentally that Mr. Scott was a cousin of Jennie Dunneway, the noted elocutionist. Mr. and Mrs. Hammer became parents of eight children, namely: David; Charles, now a resident of Cheney; Viola May, wife of W. A. Liddle; Alva A., now a student at the Washington Agricultural College; and Roy E., living; also Oscar, Albert A. and Ira, deceased. [Source: "An Illustrated History of Whitman County, Washington," W.
