Description	:	Age 71y 2m 2da WOLCOTT SEYMOUR, Esq., the first son of Jeremiah Seymour and Emily Demming, his wife, was born August 17, 1813, in Hartford County, Conn. His ancestors were from England, being among the first settlers in Connecticut. Read More	Age 71y 2m 2da WOLCOTT SEYMOUR, Esq., the first son of Jeremiah Seymour and Emily Demming, his wife, was born August 17, 1813, in Hartford County, Conn. His ancestors were from England, being among the first settlers in Connecticut. About 1675, three brothers came to this country, and from these all the Seymours have descended, among whom we may mention the Hon. Horation Seymour, at one time Governor of New York, and Hon. Thomas H. Seymour ; the latter was educated at West Point, held the office of Colonel in the Mexican War, elected Governor of Connecticut, also Congressman from the Hartford District, and was appointed Minister to Russia. In 1838, Mr. Seymour left the scenes of his youth, gave up the comforts of a pleasant home, and migrated to Iowa, landing in Burlington, July 5th, the day after it became a territory. After exploring six months, he concluded to make Danville his future home. Beginning life in moderate circumstances, Mr. Seymour entered 320 acres of wild land which he immediately began improving ; but when the land came into market in 1839, it could hardly be called a home. In the course of time, it, with many other farms, became an oasis in the wilderness, and at the present writing, he has a fine farm with improvements second to none in the country. Then, as now, the common schools were the great fountains of knowledge, and to these Mr. Seymour went in the winter, spending his summers in working on the farm. Up to the present 'Squire Seymour has held the office of Justice of the Peace for 29 years, and for the last 8 years the office of Secretary of the School Board. Mr. Seymour was originally a Whig ; he afterwards joined the ranks of the Republican party. He has never been a party man, but rather a supporter of certain principles and doctrines which the party, with which he was identified, recognized in their platform. Not so much the party the candidates belonged to, as the men themselves. In 1852, Mr. Seymour was elected to the Legislature, as a Representative from Des Moines County ; being elected by the Whigs, he was a member of a small minoirty, the Democracy holding the balance of power. One political pricniple of which the 'Squire is a strong advocate is here worthy [or] our notice ; it is the danger that lies in large majorities and small minorities. Some party is largely in the ascendancy; they nominate a candidate for some important position, and, it matters not whether he is fitted for the position or not, he will be elected ; so we see there is a strong tendency to throw off a responsibility where all the power is in the hands of one party. The safety of our country depends upon the political parties being evenly balanced. February 3, 1842, Walcott Seymour and Amelia Hawkins were joined in marriage ; they had two sons, both of whom are living ; one at home, and the other one mile below Danville. His wife died in 1865, and January 2, 1873, he was married to Mary Robinson. Although living on a farm, yet Mr. Seymour feels that his days of work have passed, and he now lives at his ease, surrounded by all the comforts that tend to make life pleasant.
