| Description | : | He was the son of John and Sarah (Corliss) Witham and may have been born at Glover, VT. As a young child he walked from Canada with his father to Woodbury, to the home of an uncle (David Witham) who kept a tavern known as the "Green Mountain House", and later as the Witham Stand. He enlisted in Co I, 9th VT VOLS on 28 May 1862. He was taken prisoner at Harper's Ferry, VA. His company was exchanged the following spring, then was active around Richmond.
