Word of the death Thursday at Denver, Colorado of Mrs. Clifford Matthews, formerly Miss Abbie Knowles, of Rockford, was received here today by Mrs. Winnie Woodward Taylor, 1708 Harlem Blvd. Mrs. Matthews was the daughter of Capt. Friends recall family prominent here years ago. Word of the death Thursday at Denver, Colorado of Mrs. Clifford Matthews, formerly Miss Abbie Knowles, of Rockford, was received here today by Mrs. Winnie Woodward Taylor, 1708 Harlem Blvd. Mrs. Matthews was the daughter of Capt. Henry Knowles, and for many years the family had resided to move to Oak Park in 1900. Mrs. Knowles died there a few years later. Mrs. Matthews went to woodburn, Iowa following her marriage and upon the death of her husband she and her daughter moved to Greely Colorado and later to Denver. Mrs. Matthews father was a sea captain and his oldest child, Mrs. A.E.Holt of Evanston was born on the ocean. Because of her birthplace she was named (Grace Pacific.) In the 70s Capt. Knowles was in the importing business here with his brother-in-law Ansel Collins handling teas and spices. He later entered business with the late J.M.Hill. Mrs. Matthew was a member Second Congregational Church and a student at Rockford College. Surviving Mrs. Matthews are her daughter, Gretchen of Denver; her sister, Mrs. Holt of Evanston and two brothers Dr. E. Knowles of Greely and Royal Knowles of Kansas City. Funeral will be in Denver on Saturday.
