Abbie Jane Niver was born in Wesley, Iowa the daughter of Ray and Pearl (Castler) Niewald. Abbie attended grade school in Wesley, Iowa, and graduated from Rock Falls High School in 1941. She was united in marriage to Dwayne Niver on August 6, 1948, in Mason City, and to this union two children were born, Patricia and Donald. Throughout her career, Abbie worked as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company for 33 ½ years until her retirement in 1981. Her grandchildren remembered her as a great checker player, and she also had a special bond with her granddog Furman. Abbie was a very devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and always put the needs of her family before hers. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mason City, and the Telephone Pioneers. Those left to cherish her memory is her husband, Dwayne Niver of MasonCity; two children, Patricia (Dennis) Urell of Greenville, S.C., and Donald (Patricia) Niver of Mason City; three grandchildren, Sarah (Dean) Oliver of Las Vegas, NV, Kristin Niver of Irvine, CA, and Ryan Niver of Iowa City, IA; two great grandchildren, Isaiah and Isabella Oliver as well as nieces, nephews, and other extended family members and friends. Abbie was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Buena Hearity, Fay Murphy, and Verna Dunn.
