Read More	Marion Weekly Sentinel Thursday April 12, 1923 All Marion was deeply shocked last Saturday when it was learned that Abel Levasseur, a retired farmer who came to Marion about a year ago, had cut his throat with a razor at his home, 1090 Eleventh street, while laboring under a spell of temporary mental aberration, brought on by worry over ill health and his income tax returns. It was about 10 o'clock Saturday morning that Mrs. Levasseur, on her return from a trip to Cedar Rapids, discovered her husband lying face downward in the coal bin in the basement of their home, apparently lifeless. Dr. Crew was called and a hasty examination showed that life was not extinct, although the windpipe was partially severed and some of the smaller arteries were completely severed. First aid was rendered after which he was rushed to Mercy hospital, Cedar Rapids, in the Turner ambulance. Efforts to save his life were without avail and he passed away at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. The funeral was held from the home Monday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev. S.D. Noah, pastor of the Christian church, assisted by Rev. Dr. Finney, pastor of the Presbyterian church. The services were largely attended, the many beautiful floral offering further attesting the esteem and respect in which he was held. The interment was in Oak Shade cemetery. Abel LeVasseur, oldest son of Alphonse and Marie LeVasseur, was born at Berrington, Mass, in 1862. At 9 years of age, he came with his parents to Iowa, moving with them onto the farm, which later was to be a residence for him and his family for a period of years. In 1897, he was married at Waterloo to Mary Youngblood of that city; and together they went to housekeeping on the E.P. Taylor farm five miles northeast of Marion. Later they moved to the old homestead, where they continued their residence until the time of their coming to Marion in August of 1922, where he was living at the time of his death. He was baptized into the Catholic Church in infancy. He was a kind husband, a loving father, a good neighbor, and one whose honesty and integrity finds defense by those who knew him best. He leaves to mourn their loss his wife, Mary LeVasseur, three sons, Louie, Leo and Ernest; one daughter, Irene and two grandchildren, Melvin and Marie LeVasseur, three brothers, Albert of Denver, Colo., Julius of Hartford, So. Dak., and L.A. LeVasseur of Marion. Two sisters, Mrs. Beckner and Mrs. Michel of Marion. One brother and one sister preceded him in death.
