She was a patient sufferer and waiting for the Master's call. Abbie Jones was born at Henry County, Iowa, Sept. 12, 1838, and at the time of her death she lacked four days of being eighty-five years old. She was converted and united with the M.E. Church in 1850. She became very active in religious work immediately after her conversion. At the age of twelve she led in prayer and praise meetings. Mrs. Holstine, as far as records show, was the first woman licensed to preach in the Methodist Church. She was licensed within the bounds of the Central Illinois Conference, by the McComb District Conference somewhere in the seventies. She gave thirty years to Evangelistic work and was the means of leading many to Christ. She was married to G.W. (sic) Holestine in 1855 to which union three children were born: Mary T. Holland who survives her, G.W. Holstine and Dora E. David, both deceased. There are four step children living: Mrs. Docia Penington of McMinnville, Ore., J.W. and J.H. Holstine of Cherokee and W.J. of Colchester, Ill. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Methodist Church of Cherokee by her pastor, Rev. Ira Torrence of McCune assisted by Rev. E.L. Torrence and Rev. Dolson of McCune, a retired minister. Remains were laid to rest in Cherokee cemetery. The following lines were written by a friend and given to her daughter, Mrs. Holland, at the time.
