A daughter of Mary McDowell and William Cheeseborough, who were married December 13, 1698, Abigail was baptized at Stonington, Connecticut, on May 14, 1710. Her father, William Cheseborough, died January 2, 1739–40, and her mother died March 23, 1744. Abigail Chesebrough of Groton married Thomas Mumford on December 7, 1727, at Stonington. Her husband was a son of Thomas Mumford, and grandson of Thomas Mumford, an early settler of Portsmouth and Kingstown, Rhode Island. The husband Thomas was born on Groton Bank on September 14, 1707. Abigail and Thomas had 6 sons, including Benjamin, who married Ann; Thomas of Groton and Norwich, born September 10, 1728, and married (1) Catharine Havens; and Capt David Mumford, born March 10, 1731 (named for his mother's eldest brother, David Cheseborough), married Rebecca Saltonstall, died May 1807. Abigail's husband Thomas Mumford was lost at sea about 1750. Eleazer Lord married Zerviah Leffingwell on April 30, 1728, in Saybrook, Connecticut (Connecticut Town Marriage Records, Barbour Collection, online). After her death, he married Abigail Mumford of Groton, widow of Thomas Mumford, on April 16, 1754. She was 46 years old at the time of their marriage, and her daughter Abigail was 18. Abigail would marry Eleazer Lord's son, Asa Lord on January 11, 1759. (Mumford Memoirs, pp. 114–115, online; Vital Records of Norwich, 1913, I:135.) In his will, dated September 29, 1773, at Norwich, Connecticut, Eleazer Lord wills to his wife Abigail "one Third part of my Movable Estate that Shall Remain after Said Debts and funeral Charges are paid, to be to her, her Heirs & assigns forever; I also Will to my Said Wife Abigail the free use and Improvement of one third part of all my Real Estate including a Third part of my now Dwelling House and what Room She Shall need in the Celler So long as she Remains my Widow and Chooses to Dwell in Said House." He also names his sons "now surviving": Eleazer, Nathan & Hezekiah; his two daughters Zerviah and Lydia; two granddaughters, Hannah and Mary, daughters of his deceased son Asa Lord; and his grandson Asa Lord, son of his son Nathan Lord.
