Abigail Mitchell was baptized 26 Sep 1618, in Halifax, West Riding, Yorkshire, England, the eldest of six children. She immigrated with her parents 17 Aug 1635 to Boston from Bristol, England on the Ship "James". Matthew and Susan Mitchell settled in Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut. Abigail Mitchell married Rev. Abraham Sr. Pierson in 1640 in Lynn, Essex, Massachusetts. They had ten children. Rev. Abraham Sr. Pierson immigrated in 1639 to Boston to minister to the Puritans at Lynn. He may have been recruited by Governor John Winthrop of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Both John Winthrop and Abraham Pierson were graduates of Trinity College, Cambridge University, England. Rev. Abraham Sr. Pierson was minister of the Congregational Church at Southampton, Long Island (1640-1646). In 1646 he moved his family to Branford, New Haven Colony, where he and Abigail raised their children. Rev. Abraham Sr. Pierson was minister of Guilford Congregational Church ( ten miles from Branford) from 1646 until 30 Oct 1666, at which time he and a number of the Guilford church members moved their families to New Jersey to help found the new township named "New Ark" (Newark). They were dissatisfied with the action which forced New Haven Colony to merge with Connecticut Colony. Rev. Abraham Pierson served as minister of the Congregational Church there until his death. His son, Abraham Jr. Pierson, was assistant minister. Rev. Abraham Sr. Pierson died 9 Aug 1678 in Newark, Essex, New Jersey, and was buried in the Old Burying Ground in Newark. After the death of her husband, Abigail Pierson moved (date unknown) to Connecticut to live with her daughter, Abigail (Pierson) Davenport, who married on 27 Nov 1662, Branford, New Haven Colony, the Rev. John Jr. Davenport. The Rev. John Sr. Davenport, a non-conforming Puritan, along with his childhood friend, the wealthy Theophilus Eaton, co-founded New Haven Colony in 1646. Abigail Pierson's son, Rev. Abraham Jr. Pierson, also left Newark, New Jersey, and settled in Clinton, Killingworth, Middlesex County, Connecticut. He is credited with the creation of the Collegiate School which was moved from Old Saybrook in 1716 to New Haven. It was renamed Yale College in 1718 and Rev. Abraham Jr. Pierson was the first president of the college. Abigail Pierson's daughter, Susanna (Pierson) Bell, wife of Capt. Jonathan Bell, died at Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut in 1732. Abraham Sr. Pierson was revealed in an article in "The History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield" by Donald Lines Jacobus, Vol 2, page 1076: "Mitchell, Matthew (page 415) from South Ouram (line 4) read Owram. "The fact that a dau. of Matthew Mitchell became wife of Rev. Abraham Pierson was revealed in Winthrop mss. discovered by Col. Charles E. Banks."
