May 26, 1898 Goldsboro Weekly Argus, pg 1 The death of Mrs. Abbie Grantham, mother of Ex-Sheriff Grantham and wife of the late Hiram Grantham, occurred at the home of her son Mr.Gideon Grantham, on Thursday in the seventy-six year of her age. After the death of her husband about twenty-one, years she continued to live at the old homestead in Grantham township, where everybody in the whole country was always a welcome visitor. The hospitality of her husband was unbounded and the good old lady that she was, was never more happy than when she made others happy. She seemed to have no higher ambition than to make pleasure for others and it is said of her that she has fed more people gratuitously than any other woman in the country. All people of her neighborhood mourn her loss as they would a relative for she was loved by them all. The funeral was held from the home Friday afternoon and the interment was made in the family burying ground beside the remains of her husband.
