Abigail Smith Coolidge was born in Buchanan, Michigan, October 16, 1836, and died at Edgewood, Iowa, August 5, 1914, aged 77 years, 9 months and 19 days. Her father was born in Massachusetts and her mother in Canada, both of whom died in her early childhood. When twelve years old she came to the vicinity of Edgewood, then Yankee Settlement, with three sisters and one brother all of whom have long since passed away. She was married to Jonathan Coolidge, February 10, 1853, assuming at once a loving care of his six motherless children, William, Augustus, Frank, Charles, Brigham and Elizabeth. She was the mother of ten children, one of whom died in infancy; one, Delbert, in early youth and one, Mrs. Mary Homes, several years after her marriage. George and Verd, who with their families, have kindly ministered to their mother in her last days are living at Edgewood, her home having been with her youngest son Verd. Chelsia, Jessie, Walter, Alice and Lillie have gone to different parts of the country but not far enough away to be beyond a mother's tender love. Her husband, Jonathan Coolidge, died June 24, 1872. Mrs. Coolidge became a christian in childhood and united with the Congregational church. In 1873 she united with the Free Baptist church in which she has since held membership, with the exception of four years which she spent in Colorado. She has been a member of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union thirty years, being in full sympathy with its numerous lines of work. Many are the homes she has brightened by her cheerfulness and kindly help, and the name "Aunt Abby" will long be spoken by many with gratitude and affection. Although hers was a long life of toil and responsibility, in later years she had the privilege of travel in western and southern lands visiting children and grandchildren. Her devotion to her family was rare and beautiful and the longing of her heart was ever for their welfare. Children, grandchildren, many relatives and friends are left in sadness, but she has had her long-desired and long-looked-for message. "Come Home." The funeral services were held at the Congregational church Friday afternoon, Rev. C.H. True officiating. Several passages of Scripture were read which she had selected for the occasion, one of which, "I go to prepare a place for you" was used for the text. The hymns were also of her selection. The remains were interred in Edgewood cemetery. Card of Thanks.
