Description	:	Son of Benjamin and Phebe Brownell. was well educated for his time, attending a Latin school as a boy, and being instructed in his fathers trade (tailor) when at home. During his minority he worked at his trade in his native village and in Bristol county Mass. During the invasion of Rhode Island by they British at the time of the revolution he enlisted for the defense of his country and served a short time in the patriot army, although in religious belief he was a member of the Society of Friends. He returned home in 1778, and when the well-known Jemima Wilkinson, the noted Evangelist of the Society of Friends, and daughter of Jeremiah and Elizabeth Wilkinson appeared at Westport, he with many other of the young men became a follower of this great teacher, and subsequently preached in many parts of New England. He kept a diary of his travels and preachings with her and which was then placed in the possession of his granddaughter, Mrs. Leary. He was at Groton the day after the great slaughter at Fort Griswold, when the defenders were killed by the British soldiers and Mr. Brownell saw the mutilated bodies and attended the funeral of many of the victims. After that Mr. Brownell returned to his native place and settled into cultivating the soil. He became the introducer of the silk worm in that section and planted a great number of mulberry trees for the silk worms to feed on but this business did not meet the success that was anticipated. In 1784 Mr. Brownell was married at Groton to Hannah Crary born 1761. She died in 1837. Both were buried in the family cemetery at Westport, Mass.
