Arrangements are being handled by Crawford Funeral Chapel of Watertown, SD Abner was born on June 2, 1926, in Waukon, IA, to Joseph and Ida (Lee) Johnson. He attended school through the eighth grade. He enlisted in the US Army and served during WWII. After his honorable discharge, Abner started working construction in Hoven. In November of 1947, he married Irene Huber in Hoven, SD. The couple lived in Hoven where they owned and operated two different cafes. Irene passed away in 1966. He married Mary Maroney on June 7, 1969, in Gettysburg, SD. Abner started Johnson DeLaval Milking Equipment. He operated the business until the couple moved to Montgomery City, MO, where he did carpentry work. In 2009, the couple retired and moved back to Watertown. Abner was a member of the Episcopal Church and was a lifetime member of the VFW. He volunteered at the Humane Society in Montgomery City. He enjoyed traveling and dancing on Friday and Saturday nights. He is survived by his wife, Mary, of Watertown, SD; his son, Wendel (Karla) Johnson, of Watertown, SD: step-children: George (Wilma) Maroney of Fulton, MO, Dixie McGrath of Lehigh Acres, FL, Gerrene Maroney of Indio, CA, Cheryl (Bill) Hanson of Sioux Falls, SD, Greg Maroney of Albuquerque, NM, and Denise Maroney of Mequon, WI; two grandchildren; 17 step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; 22 step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Gordon Johnson, of Marion, IA; and a sister, Ruth McClurg, of Viroqua, WI. Abner was preceded in death by his first wife, Irene; an infant daughter; one son, Ray; a step-daughter, Sherri Henderson; one sister, Mildred, and three brothers: Donald, Kenneth and Hartley.
