Covalt's Station was finished before the spring of 1790, and it was large, with 4 corner blockhouses and about 15 dwellings inside, and strong gates. The settlers would venture outside to perform the necessary tasks, hunting game, chopping firewood and shaping shingles, being a courier betwen the Station and home base of Columbia, and so on. On February 27, 1791, Abel Cook was returning from Columbia when he was ambushed and massacred by Indians. His associates from the Station later found his body, and he was carried back to Covalt's Station and buried alongside his friend Abraham Covalt, Jr., who had been massacred not long before. Later the Founder, Abraham Covalt, Sr., and another man would also be killed by Indians, and the Station was abandoned and fell into ruins.
