Description	:	Included in the settlers of the West Prairie community in the summer of 1873 were Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Knudson Fodness. They made the trek from Minnesota with covered wagon facilities —with their two children, Dorthea and Knute—in company with the Ole A. Gedstad family, and Gulbrand K. Fodness. Mr. Fodness was born February 17, 1843 in Valdres, Norway. Mrs. Fodness, nee Marit Oldsdatter Strand, likewise was a native of Valdres, with March 26, 1815 as her birth date. Mr. Fodness was born February 17, 1843 in Valdres, Norway. Mrs. Fodness, nee Marit Oldsdatter Strand, likewise was a native of Valdres, with March 26, 1815 as her birth date. They were united in marriage in 1867, while still in Norway, and in 1869 joined the immigrants to America, settling near Winona, Minnesota. Here they farmed for four years, until their settlement in Dakota Territory. Mr. and Mrs. Fodness homesteaded seven miles southeast of Lennox, where they endured the many hardships of pioneer days. When they came to Dakota Territory and filed their claim here, there was only one house between their homestead and Sioux Falls. There were no trees and the tall prairie grass flourished. They walked from their camp (which was on or near the place Merle Sherrud now lives) to Sioux Falls and back again the same day. Their travel in the early years here included walking, horseback riding or by wagon. Mr. and Mrs. Fodness were charter members of the West Prairie congregation, and the former among the members aiding in the building of the first church structure. Twelve children were born to this union, three passing away I infancy. Six children still reside in the Lennox vicinity, namely: Ole, Gunhild (Mrs. Ed Johnson), Gilbert, Henry, Theodore and Martin A. Fodness. Alfred resides northeast of Canton. Dorthea (Mrs. Ole Nelson) died in February, 1932, at the age of 64 years, and Knute passed away in June, 1931, at the age of 62 years. Mr. Fodness passed away April 8, 1907 after a brief illness. Mrs. Fodness expired October 11, 1921, attaining the age if 76 years. She passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ed Johnson, where she made her home the last summer
