From this union 8 children would be born: John, Asa, Mary, Lemuel, Elizabeth, Nancy, Abraham John and Lydia. After about 40 years of marriage, Anna passed away and Abraham next took up with Martha Ann Leake, a very young woman who was Anna's live-in caretaker in the years just before Anna died. The 1850 census shows Martha, age 18, residing as a live-in housekeeper with Abraham, who claimed to be 74 years of age. Martha also has with her an infant son, John. Though Abraham never claimed paternity to Martha's son, John, he would come to claim paternity to another son born to Martha a year later, Jabez Leake Alger. Abraham passed away at age 80, just before Christmas in 1854. His will was recorded in Page Co., VA on Christmas day. In it, he does claim paternity to Jabez and wills him some household items, 20 acres of land and a house which was to be built on that land. Although he did not claim to also be John Leake's father, he made provisions for both John and Martha as well. Jabez would later become a legal ward of Abraham's son, Asa, who would almost immediately begin conducting business "on behalf" of his pre-school aged half-brother. A lot of what Asa did in regards to these "business" dealings just doesn't seem right, in my opinion, as it appears he squandered away anything Abraham left Jabez... But that's just how I perceive it. That doesn't mean that's how it was. •.¸¸❤❤¸.••.¸¸❤❤¸.••.¸¸❤❤¸.• Following Abraham Alger's Death: Asa W. Alger, a son of Abraham and Anna, became guardian of his half-brother, Jabez Leake Alger, the orphan son of Abram Alger, on 26 Feb 1855. (Guardian Bonds, Book 1). Asa also sold household items, a cow, and a swine for Jabez in 1856 and paid taxes for himself and Jabez in 1859 (Page County, VA Land Tax Records). Jabez was last recorded in the 1860 U.S. Census. He and half-brother, John Leake, who's father was named as Clifton Jenkins on his death record, were residing in Asa's home. Asa passed away about 3 months after that census was enumerated. ** Martha Ann Leake had a third child out of wedlock, Joseph Franklin Leake. She later married his father, William Henry Getts, on 3 Feb 1877 in Page County, and the two went on to have four more children together.
