Reeves who lives five miles from this place jumped up from his dinner table last Saturday and seized a musket heavily loaded with shot, rushed out to kill a hawk which had long preyed on his poultry. ABRAHAM REEVES, nephew of J. S. Reeves who lives five miles from this place jumped up from his dinner table last Saturday and seized a musket heavily loaded with shot, rushed out to kill a hawk which had long preyed on his poultry. While getting over a fence 100 rods from his house, the gun was discharged when the muzzle was close to his body and the whole charge entered just below the heart. Shouting "Maria" the name of his wife, he instantly expired. His seven year old son was following and seeing his father fall ran to the house and told his mother that "Paw" called her. Not dreaming that anything serious had happened she went out leisurely, but when she came upon the spot she found her husband dead, and the appalling sight nearly crazed her. When the neighbors arrived they found her supporting the head of her hus-band in her lap, her clothes drenched with his blood and her three children surrounding her, all weeping and wailing...a sight calculated to unnerve the stoutest heart. John Reeves' theory is that the deceased caught the top of the board fence with his right hand, swing-ing the gun over with the left, and as he brought it down the hammer struck a board with force enough to discharge the piece. The fence was powder-burned, as also his right hand. Mr. Reeves was a son of Elijah T. Reeves, was thirty-five years old and had lived in this county thirty-two years and was a good citizen. He was buried on Sunday with Masonic honors.
