Description	:	Abraham Thomas "Abe/Tom" Wheeldon was born to Elijah Benedict and Elizabeth Bannister (Norris) Wheeldon on 13 September 1848 in Morgan County, Indiana. He was the sixth of (at least) ten children born to this couple. Abe spent the first two years of his life living in Morgan County, Indiana before the family relocated to Iowa in 1850 (sometime AFTER they were enumerated in the federal census). Read More	Abraham Thomas "Abe/Tom" Wheeldon was born to Elijah Benedict and Elizabeth Bannister (Norris) Wheeldon on 13 September 1848 in Morgan County, Indiana. He was the sixth of (at least) ten children born to this couple. Abe spent the first two years of his life living in Morgan County, Indiana before the family relocated to Iowa in 1850 (sometime AFTER they were enumerated in the federal census). He spent the rest of his life living in Warren and Polk Counties there. At the age of 23, on 22 October 1871, Abe married the love of his life Lucinda Alice Arnott in Warren County, Iowa. To this union five children were born: Nancy C (b. 1870; d. 1871), John Arville (b. 1875; d. 1953), Perry Alphonse "Bud" (b. 1879; d. 1957), Fred A "Freddie" (b. 1881; d. 1902) and Albert Ross (b. 1883; d. 1969). Sometime between his marriage and the 1880 US Federal Census, Abraham became completely blind. According to information handed down in the family, the cause of his blindness was due to a second set of eyelashes that grew inside of his eyelids. Despite his disability, Abe continued to farm his land for many years--an occupation he held for all of his adult life. He was a well-known and rather respected citizen within his community. After a battle with stomach cancer, Abraham passed from this life to the next on 27 May 1903 in Richland Township, (Warren Co.) Iowa where he had lived for a great number of years. Due to rather poor weather--the area had experienced heavy flooding--no funeral service was held prior to his interment. However, a memorial service was held in his honor on 6 September 1903 in the Otterbein Chapel. He was ultimately laid to rest in the Hartford Cemetery in Hartford, (Warren Co.) Iowa. After her own passing in 1941, Lucinda was interred right next to Abe. _________________________________________ The information about the cause of Abe's blindness was relayed to me by Virginia (Sill) Wheeldon. It was told to her by a great-grandson of Abe's brother Theodore during a family reunion. __________________________________________ Note about the marker/plaque for Abe and Lucinda [relayed to me by Virginia (Sill) Wheeldon]: 1. Cement stone was made by Albert Ross Wheeldon. He only put the family surname on the stone--no other names and no dates. 2. Joseph Leroy Wheeldon and his wife Virginia discussed buying a plaque to attach to the cement marker after noticing that other families had done so for their own deceased relatives. After Joseph's death in 2007, Virginia made the decision to go ahead and purchase the memorial plaque. 3. After deciding how the plaque should look, Virginia and Barbara Jane Bowers (a cousin) purchased it. One of Joseph and Virginia's daughters and her husband installed the plaque atop the cement marker. 4. The plaque is gold colored and made from a long-lasting plastic/resin. The image on the plaque is NOT of the family barn. It is simply a photo of a barn that may have been "in-style" during Abe's lifetime.
