The whole area took its name from the little pre-Revolutionary tavern. Note: This tombstone is located under a bush. Abraham's brother, Cornelius, had a deed of 1721 recorded in East Jersey Deeds, Lib. K, page 328. Perhaps this deed can be found in this same location. As a young man, Abraham, along with his brother Cornelis, moved to Monmouth County, New Jersey. He and his wife lived in Monmouth County until about 1724 when Abraham purchased ninety acres of land in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. The property was situated along Rockaway Creek near the confluence of its north and south branches, and was part of a large tract originally owned by George Willocks, John Budd and James Logan. It was survayed and recorded in 1720. Abraham built a large public house, or inn, on the main highway running from New Brunswick to Easton, Pennsylvania. It was painted white and the village that grew up around it eventually became known as Whitehouse, New Jersey. His own private house was built in 1731. Abraham and his wife joined the Reformed Dutch Church at Readington in 1749. Ibid., p.128. Second daughter Elizabeth Vanhorn when 24. Son, Cornelius, small tract of land in Upper Croswix Creek in Burlington County purchased of Matthew Watson, he paying money to younger brother Daniel Vanhorn at 21. Seven sons and three daughters. Names his loving wife Annetje, to have full possession of his dwelling house, gristmill, and 240 acres, until his youngest son Abraham reached the age of twenty-one years, afterwhich Annetje is to have "no more of the premises during her widowhood than the equal part of my dwelling house, the house where Samuel Covill now liveth, with half the orchard and ten acres below the milldam." She is also to receive "the best bed in the house with all its furniture thereunto belonging, the cupboard, one dozen pewter plates, six pewter platters, three iron pots, my negro man named Ceasar and his wife Bet during my said wife's life, and after her death, or the said negros come to be past hard labor, that they shall be maintained by my son Abraham Van Horne, his heirs and assigns, for I positively order that they shall not be sold to any person whatsoever." He gives to daughter Margarete the sum of one hundred pound and the negro girl named Maria. To daugter Phildia, a negro girl named Hannah. To daughter Annetje, a negro girl named Dinah. To daughter Neeltje, the negro girl named Hagar. His son Abraham is to receive the negro boy named Peter, "also three milch cows, three of my best horses, my best wagon, two plows all with their tackling thereunto belonging, as his property forever." His remaining part of his estate is to be divided among his three daughters, Phildia, Neeltje, Annetje, and wife. "Eldest son, Matthew Van Horne," to receive 200 acres where he currently lives, part of a larger tract of land containing 400 acres, the 200 acres to be passed to Matthew's children upon his death. The remaining two hundred acres to be divided among Matthew's "eldest boys viz: Abraham, William, Cornelius and Matthew," Abraham to recieve fifty acres with the sawmill, with the remaing 150 acres to be divided among the other three. The testator's son Abraham is to receive 250 acres with the gristmills, houses and barns, and is to pay his three sisters, Phidia, Neeltje, and Annetje the sum of one hundred and thirty pounds each in staggered payments after he (son Abraham) attains the age of twenty-one. Sons Cornelius and Abraham to receive, "two certain tracts of land on the Society, so called viz: the tract on where John Thomas now liveth, and the other tract of land I bought of Abraham DeWitt." Daughter Margarete and her husband Herman Roelofson to receive the tract of land on which they now live. Daughter Neeltje to receive a certain tract of land along "the Society." All rights to his Elizabeth town purchases to be divided equally among his children (with conditions). He appoints, "well beloved son Cornelius, my loving son Abraham and my son-in-law Tobias Ten Eyck" as executors.
