Description	:	First, his name was consistently Abram as an adult rather than Abraham. However, he is listed as Abraham in the 1850 Census. He was the son of Dr. Peter Skillman and Louisa Beekman Skillman of Montgomery Township, Somerset County, New Jersey. He is found with them there in the 1850 and 1860 Censuses. He was the son of Dr. Peter Skillman and Louisa Beekman Skillman of Montgomery Township, Somerset County, New Jersey. He is found with them there in the 1850 and 1860 Censuses. He attended medical school. In a 1862 Civil War draft registration is he listed as a student. In later military pension records, he is listed as having served during the Civil War as a medical cadet in the medical department of the U.S. Army. In the 1915 Iowa census he is listed as having been an "army surgeon" and his wife's obituary refers to him as a doctor. Yet census records show him as a farmer. Perhaps he never practiced medicine after the Civil War. He married Aura Moore on 13 December 1865 in Limm County, Iowa, where her family had been settled since 1853. The questions arise. How did they met? How and why did he get from New Jersey to Iowa by 1865? Could her elder brother Joseph Moore who also served in the War have introduced them? He remained in Linn County, Iowa for most of his adult life until c. 1915-1920. Abram and his wife are found in the 1870 Census in Bertram, Limm County, Iowa. The listing is a bit odd because he is listed with their baby son Alfred, likely named for his brother, who died in 1872, and she is listed next door with her parents. Their first daughter Ada died in 1867. Daughter Louisa/Lulu was born in 1873 and Frances was born in 1875, both in Iowa. They have not been found in the 1880 Census. Aura Moore Skillman's obituary says that they spent "they spent the greater part of their married life in this vicinity, although it was broken now and then by brief sojourns in the western part of the state and Dakota." Perhaps they were away in 1880. Abram is found with his wife and two unmarried daughters in Bertram, Iowa in the 1900 Census and with his youngest daughter Frances in the 1910 Census on Glass Mill Road in Cedar, Iowa. Daughter Louisa/Lulu, a school teacher, had left home by then and was living with Abram's brother Cornelius in Pluckemin, NJ in 1914. Frances married Lafayette Brown in 1911. (It is worth noting that Frances got younger and younger after marrying a 14 years younger man and her gravestone lists her as having been born in 1883.) In the 1915 Iowa Census, Abram is living alone in Cedar, Iowa. After this, his travels began. In the 1920 Census he is found in Collingswood, Camden County, New Jersey with his daughter Frances and her husband. Were they reunited with Louisa/Lulu in New Jersey? In 1920 she was in Chester, NJ teaching school. By 1930 she was in a Philadelphia mental hospital. Were her father and sister involved in placing her there in the 1920s? Collingswood is just six miles from downtown Philadelphia. The NJ mental hospital was in Trenton and infamous. Perhaps Philadelphia was a better choice. By 1928, Abram, Frances, and Lafayette had moved to Long Beach, CA. Abram is found there in the 1928 city directory and in the 1930 Census. He died there in 1930. His body was returned to Iowa to be buried with his wife. According to a local newspaper, he had visited earlier in the year.
