Nichols Steeples 91 years old May 17, 1935 LIFE STORY OF MRS. ADELINE STEEPLES Mrs. Steeples is the widow of the late Harrison Steeples, who was a Civil War veteran. She celebrated her ninety-first birthday on May 17, 1935 at her home in Farmington, Iowa. At that time she gave the following story of her life: I was born May 17, 1844, in Crawford county, Pennsylvania. I was the youngest of four children, all girls. My mother died soon after I came into this world and my father was left without a housekeeper. When I was five years old I with my father and sisters, moved in a covered wagon from Pennsylvania to Avon, Ill. We were there only a short time when my father returned with we children to Pennsylvania. Very soon, or in 1852, father passed away leaving we children Orphans. I was sent to Chicago to live with an aunt. When I grew to young womanhood I went to Warsaw, Ill., where I met and married Harrison Steeples at the close of the Civil War, in 1865. He had been in the service for the entire four years. He was by choice a farmer, but an accident that occurred a few years after our marriage caused a permanent injury to his back so that he was handicapped in this particular occupation. We later moved to a farm near Granger, Mo., and lived for many years in that section of the country. We moved to Mt. Sterling, Van Buren county in 1910. Then about five years later we came to Farmington where I have lived ever since. I am the mother of five children. All in good health. My Oldest daughter, Mary Steeples Phillips was born November 18, 1866. Next was came William, who was born April 5, 1870. Harry Steeples was born April 19, 1873, then came a daughter, Bertie Steeples Prewitt who was born in 1879 and who now lives in Granger, Mo. and then the baby, Wesley, was born in 1882. All of my children except Bertie live in Farmington. ------------------------- MRS. ADELINE STEEPLES OF FARMINGTON IS SURVIVED BY FIVE CHILDREN Funeral services for Mrs. Adeline Steeples, widow of Harrison Steeples, a Civil War veteran, were held Friday afternoon at the Farmington M. E. church in charge of the Rev. Harvey Butler, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Campbell of Ft. Madison. Mrs. Steeples, who was ninety-two years old, died at her home in Farmington Tuesday. Before moving to Farmington twenty years ago she was a resident of Mt. Sterling. She is survived by five children, William, Harry, Wesley Steeples, and Mrs. Mary Phillips of Farmington and Mrs. Bertie Pruitt of Gorin, Mo.
