Mr. Borschel has been a sufferer from asthma for some time and recently contracted an acute case of bronchitis which with other ailments caused his death. Since the close of the Civil war in which he actively participated, Mr. Borschel has been a constant resident of his present home, an has been an important factor in the upward growth and continued prosperity of that locality. Mr. Borschel was a native of Hesse, Germany, and was born Dec. 4, 1031. When twenty years of age he determined to seek his fortune in America, and arrived in New York in October, 1851. The following year was spent near Philadelphia. He then went to South Carolina, but the climate not agreeing with him he returned to Philadelphia. He next found employment in Steuben county, New York, and from there came to Johnson county where he invested his savings in forty acres in Graham township, section 16. About this time the Civil war broke out and Mr Borschel enlisted in August, 1861, in Company H, Second Iowa Cavalry, and bravely served throughout the entire period of the struggle, courageously facing privations and the perils of capture and death four years and two months. He was honorably mustered out of the service at Selma, Alabama, in October 1865. Mr. Borschel then returned to Iowa and on June 7, 1866, just thirty-eight years ago today, was united in marriage with Miss Hannah Jacobs of Newport township, a daughter of Nicholas Jacobs and Lovina C. (Wieneke) Jacobs. The parents of Mrs. Borschel were married in Johnson county and were among the pioneer settlers of Newport township. Mr. and Mrs. Borschel settled upon the land which he had purchased when he came to Iowa in 1857. The home acreage and is now one of the best farms in the county. To Mr. and Mrs. Borschel were born twelve children, eleven of whom are living. They are Mrs. William Stiff and William Borschel of Clarence, Iowa; Mrs. William Parsons and Mrs. George Parsons of Graham townshp; Mrs. Charles Spinden, Edw. F., Mrs. J.G. Marner; Ethel M., and Harry D. Borschel reside at home [this comes to only 9; from a different obituary: Mrs. Emma Stiff and William Borschel of Clarence, Iowa; Mrs. Carrie Parsons, Mrs. Martha Parsons, Mrs. Elinora Spinden, Edward, Ethel and Harry D., Charlotte, Lucile, of Graham township; and Mrs. Anna Marner of Iowa City]. The deceased was an esteemed member of the German Methodist church and an active worker in that organization, aiding liberally in the extension of religious influence. Mr. Borschel ever since his residence in Johnson county has always taken a leading part in politics, and ably occupied various important positions of trust in the township. As school trustee and a director of the school board he faithfully and persistently labored in behalf of educational advancement. Mr. Borschel was a valued member of Iowa City Post No. 8, G.A.R., and always enjoyed the social reunions of the veterans. Years have elapsed since, upon the field of war, he gave his faithful service in behalf of the national existence of his adopted county, but up to the time of his death he was the same true, patriotic and public spirited citizen. In the death of Mr. Borschel Johnson county loses one of its noble pioneers and he will be mourned in many homes. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 1:30 from the house and two o'clock from St. John's church in Graham township. The services will be conducted bu Rev. Mr Van Horn.
