Three Remsen Families were thrown into sorrow last Thursday [June 6] when word came of the death of Adam Nagel, 70, a well remembered former resident here [Remsen], whom death took suddenly at his home near Gettysburg, S.D., that day. His death was caused by a cerebral hemorrhage and came but a few hours after its first warning. Surviving Mr. Nagel are his widow, a daughter, a son, two brothers and five sisters. Hale and hearty, apparently, Mr. Nagel went forth at his accustomed hour shortly after breakfast Thursday [June 6th], to begin his day’s work in the field. Shortly before noon he returned to the house and to his wife complained of illness. Mrs. Nagel, sensing a serious aliment, advised him to rest but before he could reach the bed he collapsed and passed away immediately. Adam Nagel was born in Pfrondorf, Wurtemberg, Germany in 1876. He was but 13 years of age when in 1889 the entire family – parents and 11 children – came to this country and directly to Marcus [Iowa] where they established themselves at farming. The father, Martin, died in 1903, after which Joe, Martin and John moved to Gettysburg, S.D., while Adam remained here with his mother until she passed away in 1920. John, the youngest boy, died in 1942. The deceased man was well known in the Remsen and Marcus territory. While operating their farm southeast of Remsen they gained a wide acquaintance through their operation of a threshing rig in season for years: for their capable work and fair business tactics. Adam Nagel was a man of splendid qualities and his many friends regretted deeply his sudden passing as they join in condolences with the sorrowing widow and other members of the esteem able family. His death was a severe shock to the widow who deeply mourns also the sudden, unexpected passing of a son, 34 years old, but three years ago. Surviving besides Mrs. Nagel are a daughter, Mrs. A.C. Maas; a son, Albert; 24 grandchildren, the brothers Joe and Martin and five sisters, Mrs. Christina Stegeman, Holstein, Iowa; Mrs. Frederieke Steffen, Mrs. Phillip Dorr and Mrs. Herman Letsche, all of Remsen and Mrs. George Dorr [Doerr], Plainview, Nebr. Adam was a faithful member of the Lutheran church at Pembroke, S.D. Leaving Friday to attend the funeral, which was held Sunday, were Mr. and Mrs. Dorr and son Clifford, also Mr. and Mrs. Letsche.
