The funeral of this grand old man; called forth hundreds of his old neighbors and friends, men and women who had [illegible] and loved him for a generation, who gathered to pay homage to the memory of this stalwart pioneer We are privileged to publish the following resume of the remarks of Rev. Vance on the occasion of Mr. Scott's funeral This brief sketch of his life suggests those sterling qualities of his vigorous manhood together with the gentler impulses of his big heart that stamped him as a man widely revered and much beloved in,this community. Adam Scott was born in Roxbury in the "land of heather" Dec. 16, 1839. When he was six years old the family moved to England and three years later came to Canada. Here Mr. Scott grew to manhood and here he met his life companion. In 1862 he started west, coming into the States and settling in Michigan. The following year he returned to Canada to secure his bride. November 24, 1863, at Blenheim, Ont., he was married to Miss Jane Evans and they came at once to the home in Michigan. Chills and ague disturbed their happiness in Michigan and in the spring of 1867, he started west with team and covered wagon, expecting to locate in the central part of Iowa. Reaching Boone and finding, nothing that just suited him, he drove on west to Sioux City. On horseback he explored the Sioux valley and decided to settle in this region. He bought a cabin in Calliope and Mrs. Scott and two children joined him that fall. Meanwhile he filed on 160 acres in Virginia township, Union county, South Dakota. In the spring of 1868 he relinquished his original filing and homesteaded the 197 acres which has since been his home Only one item stands in the recorder's books with regard to that land. It is a deed from Uncle Sam to Adam Scott. This was indeed a pioneer home. It was three months before Mrs. Scott saw a white woman. There were settlements north until Sioux Falls was reached. To the west was the open plains. To the east the nearest settlers were in O'Brien county, Iowa. It was a land of prairies, and wild game, and Indians. As the country began to settle, the men formed a company of "Home Guards" to protect themselves and their homes from the Indians. The night before his death Mr. Scott said that he never was mustered out of this company, having been too busy to go to Elk Point at the time of the ceremony. He saw some Indian fighting, especially on a trip to the Black Hills in 1877. His health was not very. good and he was interested in a ranch in the "Hills" so decided to pay that section a visit and recuperate. He set out with a neighbor, Charley Wood. In addition to their horses they bad three yoke of cattle and several cows. The Indians were no doubt attracted by the stock and were so troublesome that the men were forced to stand guard night and day. Nine miles west of Spearfish, Mr Wood was shot from his horse and Mr. Scott completed the journey alone. He remained in the "Hills" nine weeks and during that time, Mr. Scott and companions on the ranch were attacked by 400 Indians and five of their number slain. Mr. Scott returned by stage and at the Cheyenne river their party was held, up and robbed. There were many other thrilling adventures in those early days. Perhaps the most exciting were those of the flood of 1881. The Missouri river flooded first and near Elk Point Mr. Scott effected a thrilling rescue of four who were marooned on an island. One of these had given the distress signal of a brother Mason. He remained about Elk Point for some time aiding in the rescue of men and animals. During the flood of the Sioux river Mr. Scott and two companions, one of whom was Mr. Larson, were upset in the icy water near the home place. Mr. Larson was able to care for himself and Mr. Scott helped the other man: into a nearby tree, where they spent; a miserable night. There was so much drift wood and ice that a rescue party did not dare venture out until daylight. During the grasshopper years Mr. Scott fared some better than some of his neighbors because of his extensive interest in livestock. But to him, more interesting than his cattle and hogs were his horses. He loved a good team and there was seldom a morning when the drivers were not harnessed and ready to go. Most of all he loved the "thoroughbreds" and two colts are in the barn now. He loved a race for the sake of the sport, and no man had money enough to ride ahead of his horse. They tell the story that in the days of his most famous racing mare someone asked what it would take to beat her and he replied , “a better horse”. [illegible] are as illustrating his love for his neighbors. There was serious illness at the home of the Finnies and Ed. Whittington had been riding all night for doctors and aid. He stopped at the home of Mr. Scott for breakfast and was riding on for other relatives of the Finnies. Mr. Whittington's horse was tired from the night's hard riding and Mr. Scott saw this. There was but one horse in the barn and that horse in training for a race, but Mr. Whittington was ordered to mount "Old Lud" and be on his way, while Mr. Scott secured other horses and he and Mrs. Scott hurried to the Finnies. The door always swung open and the Scott home was a regular stopping point for those going up and down the river. His kindness to his neighbors was no less marked than his kindness to his family. The children can recall only the rarest instances of corporal punishment but many instances of loving counsel and advice. He believed in his family, trusted them, and expected much of them. His sense of humor was with him to the last. The morning of his death he could joke with the Doctor. All along the street one hears men telling their stories of the kindness, and the honesty, and the good humor of Adam Scott. His hand was always extended for a. hearty greeting. He was always the same. He was always a Republican in politics and was willing to do his part in the service of his community. He never sought office but was drafted many times. His first service of this kind was as supervisor of Sioux county, to which office he was elected in 1867, the fall of his arrival in this country. He served two terms in the Legislature of South Dakota, sitting in the House in the sessions of 1905 and 1907. He had never united with the church, yet had always believed in the church, supported the church, and had reared his family in it. He was a student of the Bible and a man of prayer. The night before his death he was telling of a companion of his youth and he said he prayed for this friend almost every day of his life. The same evening he said, "The Master has been wonderfully good to me, better than I deserve." It had been hoped that he might come into the church before his death, not for what the church could do for him, but because of what he could do for the church. The measure of one's Christianity, according to the Master, was love for God and love for one’s neighbors. By such a measure Adam Scott was pre-eminently a man of God After more that 57 years of companionship Mrs. Scott was taken on April 7th of last year. Mr. Scott failed rapidly after that. There seemed to be a kind of homesickness of the soul. Mr. Scott had been troubled with his stomach and bowels through out the summer yet no one could realize that the end was so near, he stood so straight and was so active. Even during the last week when he was confined to his bed it seemed that he must soon be up again. Not until Friday afternoon did he seem slipping rapidly away. He died at 9 o’clock Friday evening, Feb 3rd, aged 82 years, 1 month and 19 days. In addition to Mrs. Scott, three children have joined the family circle in the Father’s house. Jane and Anna, the two eldest of the family having died a number of years ago, and Charley having been drowned in the river.
