Description	:	Civil War: Company G, 7th California Infantry Adam Shaffer Ross was the son of James Ross and Eve Shaffer. He relocated to Iowa with his parents in 1847. As a young man he headed to California's gold fields. During the Civil War Adam enlisted as a private at Placerville, California, on October 3, 1864, and was mustered into Company G, 7th California Infantry, on October 30. Read More	Civil War: Company G, 7th California Infantry Adam Shaffer Ross was the son of James Ross and Eve Shaffer. He relocated to Iowa with his parents in 1847. As a young man he headed to California's gold fields. During the Civil War Adam enlisted as a private at Placerville, California, on October 3, 1864, and was mustered into Company G, 7th California Infantry, on October 30. Private Ross was posted to Arizona Territory and promoted to sergeant. He returned to California and was mustered out with his company at the Presidio of San Francisco on June 28, 1866 (Orton, 784). After the war he returned to Iowa where he married (1) the widow Eleanor (Cook) Bond in 1867. He was the father of Eve and Emma Ross and stepfather of Alexander Bond. After Eleanor died he married (2) Mary Kennedy in 1872. Adam filed for a Civil War veteran's disability pension in Iowa March 29, 1886, and received application No. 567,952 and certificate No. 399,550. He moved to Salem, Missouri, in 1906, and to Van Buren, Arkansas, in 1913. Adam died at Van Buren May 16, 1919, following a horrible accident involving a gas furnace that left him severely burned. His remains were returned to Iowa for burial. --- DEATHS Adam Shaffer Ross was born in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, January 31, 1831, and died in Van Buren, Arkansas, May 16, 1919, being at the time of his death, 88 years, 3 months and 16 days of age. When a boy he worked for his father on the farm when not in school and at the age of 21 he began teaching school; teaching in the winter and farming in the summer, for some years. Later in life, he quit teaching but continued farming as long as his age would permit. He also served his country for over two years in the Civil War. In 1867, he was united in marriage to Ellenor [sic] Bond. To this union two daughters were born, Mrs. Madison Stephens of Van Buren, Arkansas, with whom he had made his home for 17 years, and Emma Ross, who died in infancy. His wife died in 1870 and he was again married to Mary Kennedy in 1872, with whom he lived with until [her death in] 1902. After this date he lived with his daughter, as mentioned above, until his death. He gave his heart to God when a youth and joined the Methodist church. Later in years he united with the United Brethren church and for the past 10 years he again made his home with Methodist church. Father Ross came to Iowa from Pennsylvania in 1847, where he had lived for many years. Thirteen years ago he moved from Iowa to Salem, Missouri, and in February, 1919, he moved from Salem to Van Buren, Arkansas, where his death occurred. He was a man of a cheerful disposition, always looking on the bright side of life and always trying to help the needy in some way. The deceased chose the 23rd Psalm for his funeral sermon text.
