Highland Recorder March 23, 1951 WELL KNOWN COUNTY MAN PASSES AWAY Adam Stephenson, prominent citizen of Highland County, died at his home four miles south of Hightown, Va., March 16, 1951. He was the son of Oscar A. and Margaret Revercomb Stephenson and was born at "Glenwood Farm" at Meadowdale Va., on March 7, 1875. Mr. Stephenson was educated in the public schools of the county, Fishburn Military School, Waynesboro, Va., and Dunsmore Business College, Staunton, Va. At the age of eighteen he went to Covington and worked as assistant Postmaster to his uncle, Mr. C H Revercomb. The following year he returned to Highland County where he was employed by V. B. Bishop and Co., and later in the Highland County Bank at Monterey. In 1905 he was married to Miss Eva Campbell, daughter of Mrs. Annie Campbell and the late Dr. Oscar J. Campbell of Monterey, Va. For nearly twenty years he was in the Mercantile business at Hightown, at first employed by G. W. Hevener and Co. For fifteen years he and his brother, W. R. Stephenson conducted the business under the firm name of "Stephenson Brothers." On leaving the mercantile business he engaged in farming at Vanderpool for several years. From there he moved to the Meadowdale community where he continued farming for the remainder of his life. Mr. Stephenson had been a member of the Highland Co. School Board, for several years, and was appointed to reassess the lands of the County in 1925. At the time of his death he was a member of the Board of Finance of Highland Co. and Judge of Election of Hightown Precinct. He had been associated with Pisgah Presbyterian Church all his life. He became a member in 1895, a ruling Elder in 1929 and Clerk of the Session in 1930. Mr. Stephenson had a genial happy disposition and he was popular in all walks of life. He was a man of integrity and faithful to his many trusts. Truly it can be said 'no one ever asked bread and received a stone" at his hand. He is survived by his wife and one daughter Anna Margaret Stephenson and the following brothers: W R Stephenson and John H of the County, R. B. Stephenson, Covington, Va., and George A. Stephenson, Richmond, Va. The funeral services were conducted from the home by the Rev. A. E. Johnson, at 11:00 a.m. Sat. March 17th. Interment was in Monterey Cemetery.
